Lead the Change
Congratulations on your acceptance to Stockdale National Honor Society! As we begin another year of service, we sincerely hope that all members will enjoy playing a part in our storied and celebrated club. Stockdale NHS has an esteemed reputation of setting high standards of excellence while serving the community, and we are excited to continue this tradition of positive influence over the course of the 2019-2020 school year.
This year’s NHS theme is “Lead the Change,” and we hope that this idea will mean more to you than simply a phrase on the back of our club t-shirts. NHS has provided help and support to countless community organizations and events over the years, all with the help of our members and officers. We hope this year inspires you to find something you’re passionate about, and we hope you’ll be at the forefront of helping others and making our community better.
With over 650 members and 12,000+ service hours last year, NHS continues to set a model for community service on the local and national scale. With every event, our members represent not only Stockdale, but the best of Stockdale. The minimum number of hours is 8 per semester, and you can sign up for events on our new NHS website (www.stockdalenhs.com). Please honor your commitment to come to an event not only for the NHS officer, but for the community leaders who are expecting help to arrive. Our Chipotle fundraiser in December can only be redeemed for one hour maximum per receipt per member if you purchase an entree, so please plan accordingly.

Featured Organization: Discovery Shop
From the outside, the Discovery Shop looks like any other thrift store, however it is actually much more. On a daily basis, they have volunteers of all ages come in and work towards creating a great experience for customers, and, more importantly, raising money for the American Cancer Society. All of the money made through the thrift shop goes to funding cancer research and other American Cancer Society projects. They have done exemplary work to raise awareness for the Society through numerous fundraisers and appearing at different community events.
Featured Event: Bakersfield Homeless Shelter After-School Program
On a cloudy September afternoon, the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter ran its after school child care program, just like they do every weekday. The program started with passing out snacks to children after they got off of their buses. That day, it started raining heavily for a few minutes, so some of the kids went outside to play in the rain. After they spent some time playing and eating, they followed the program coordinators and volunteers into a classroom. The older kids stayed on one side of the room with the younger kids on the other side. Stockdale NHS volunteers worked with the younger children, who were about 5-7 years old. We helped the children complete their homework and later played games with them when they finished.
While this is a normal, daily program, Stockdale volunteers found it to be a very fun and fulfilling experience. We could clearly see the impact we made on the kids by the smiles on their faces and their eagerness to play with us. This experience is a great example of the benefits of NHS, not just for the community, but the volunteers as well. NHS allows ordinary students to make an impact on their community throughout the school year.
